How often should you get a massage

Once a month, once a week, or only when you cannot take it any more? The answer depends on what you want massage to do.

The most common question after a first session. There is no single right answer, but there is a clear logic: frequency follows the goal, not the calendar.

General wellbeing: once or twice a month

If nothing specific hurts and you come to head off tension and feel good, the optimal rhythm is every three to four weeks. That is the interval in which everyday tension has time to build up but not yet time to become chronic.

A specific problem: a course, then maintenance

For chronic neck or back tension a single session does not produce a lasting result. The scheme that works is 4–6 sessions one to two weeks apart, then a shift to monthly maintenance. Over a course the muscle does not merely relax — it learns a new resting position.

Lymphatic drainage: always as a course

The lymphatic system responds cumulatively. One session gives a feeling of lightness for a day or two, but removing swelling durably takes 5–10 sessions across two to three weeks.

Sport and training

With active training, one deep tissue session every two weeks fits well. Important: a heavy session immediately before a competition or a hard workout is a bad idea — leave at least two days.

When it is too often

Deep tissue massage daily or every other day is not worth doing — tissue needs time to recover, and excessive pressure produces the opposite result. Light classic or lymphatic work can be done more frequently; it does not load the tissue the same way.

A practical recommendation

Start with one session and watch how long the result holds. If the tension is back within three weeks, your interval is three weeks. The body answers more precisely than any general recommendation.
